[REVIEW] Write all the (mini) reviews!!

Resident Evil: Revelations
Release Date: February 7, 2012
System ReviewedNintendo 3DS

What's Great: The 3DS gets a well-deserved console-like experience in the Resident Evil franchise. The visuals are great, controls are done surprisingly well (no, I did not use the Circle Pad Pro; I don't shop at GameStop), and inventory management gives you the impression of actual survival.

What's (Not So) Great: The same. Goddamned enemies. Over. And Over. And Over. Again. It may be restrictions of the 3DS game cart or of the system itself, but there should be more variety. I'm quite aware that other zombie game, or games that feature undead-ish enemies, are the same, but they have visually different appearances, and look different. I don't give a shit if they all attack the same, give me some variety. Something else lacking variety? The scanner. Each fill-up gives you a green herb. I understand it's similar to Super Mario and coins, but I want a scanner more like Metroid Prime and less like a useless piece of shit.

Chris and Jill's sections play dramatically different. Jill is narrow corridors on a ship that looks like the inside was ripped straight from a mansion, and Chris is more open-ended areas with a more action-oriented focus. It doesn't help, either, that you start as Jill looking for Chris, and then the next chapter, you start playing as Chris. Spoiler! Looks like he's alright...

Bottom Line: The game definitely has it's shortcomings, but it's solid overall. It's not fantastic, but it's terrible, either. If there is a sequel, I expect it to be leaps and bounds better. I mean, it's hard to fuck up "average", but then again, this is Capcom we're talking about...

[REVIEWS] Mini Reviews, Round 3!

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
Release Date: November 1, 2011
System Reviewed: PlayStation 3

What's Great: Absolutely fantastic video game. Story, visuals, gameplay, the way our voice/motion-capture actors portray their characters...everything comes together in a fantastic experience.

What's (Not So) Great: It doesn't surpass Uncharted 2 in terms of quality. Don't get me wrong, this is still a fan-fucking-tastic game. It's, simply put, not as good. It may just be me, but my expectations may have been set too high, considering how much better Uncharted 2 was than the first. It could be that Naughty Dog felt that they were riding on the curtails of the previous game, and could skirt a few things here and there. Whatever it is, I feel Naughty Dog should take a break and focus on a new IP. Oh wait, well, hello there, The Last of Us! How are you?

Bottom LineThe Uncharted series, in my eyes, is something that should be experiences by the masses. Just because it's not better than the previous game doesn't mean you should skip it. Play this game.

[REVIEWS] More Mini Reviews!

Resistance 3
Release Date: September 6, 2011
System Reviewed: PS3

What's Great: So much better than Resistance 2. The weapon wheel is back, in Insomniac fashion. Much to Ratchet & Clank fans out there, weapons are now upgraded based on how often you use them.

What's (Not So) Great: Still doesn't come close to what Resistance: Fall of Man did, and that was blow the pants off of people. I'm going to make an obscure music reference here, but Resistance is very similar to the band Finch: they blew up with their first (phenomenal) record, and each successive release was compared to the first, which never came close.

Bottom Line: It's still a great game to play. I didn't play using the Move controllers, even though I bought the Mayhem Edition (think of the R3 Doomsday Edition, but with Killzone 3 thrown in the bundle during Black Friday) for just $60. Don't pass on it because R2 sucked dick; it's a great game.

Grade: B-

[EDITORIAL] Did Microsoft Just Kill the Wii U?


Probably one of Microsoft's worst kept secrets, the idea of SmartGlass was a vastly intriguing one: be able to interact with your Xbox 360 games through a tablet or smartphone, regardless of what device you owned. Just download an app, sync it with your Xbox, and, if the game you were playing had support for it, use your device to interact with it.

Call plays, or even create and modify your own, in Madden 13 in secret.

Scan Terminals or enemy info, and unlock content for Halo Waypoint in Halo 4.

Watch videos on your device of choice, pause, then resume playing on your TV, ala Apple's AirPlay.

SmartGlass was probably the most wall-breaking technology shown at E3, as, finally, one of the major console manufacturer's has said "fuck it" to proprietorial devices, and relies on software to deliver their experience. Who better to rely on their own software than Microsoft?

[E3 2012] Nintendo Predictions: How'd I Do?

I'll be frank: I watched this on my lunch break at work, and I wasn't able to get all of it in. From coming in near the end of New Super Mario Bros. U's screen time, Nintendo's Facebook page losing it's feed, and only having an hour lunch break, I didn't get a fill like I did with Microsoft's. That, and, you know, it sucked.

Same rules apply: short n' sweet.

[E3 2012] Sony's Conference: How'd I Do?

It literally just finished moments ago, but Sony's conference came through. Now, I didn't get to watch the whole thing (you know, food), so I only caught the last 30 minutes live, but I stayed up-to-date via my RSS feeds.

[E3 2012] My Most Anticipated for E3


E3, asides from being laughed at in recent years, is the mecca of gaming for anyone, and is the time of year that gamer's flock to their computers, RSS feeds, and Spike TV (the only time it's acceptable to be on that channel) or their plethora of gaming news.

You've seen my predictions, but what about what I'm actually looking forward to? Rather than beat a dead horse with those long posts that took me (what felt like) forever, this is going to be short and sweet.

In no particular order: 

  1. Nintendo - We already know I'm a Nintendo fan (not a fanboy), so when Nintendo talks, I listen. Most of my friends know, but now everyone out there does now: I fucking hate the Wii's GUI; it's a fucking disaster. What I pray for is that they don't copy/paste the GUI from the Wii over to the Wii U. Regardless, it's a new system, it's promised a slew of features that we've been wanting for years, and, most importantly, it's got power to boot. Other than the new system, anything in regards to Zelda, better entires in IPs that don't get enough attention, and new IPs have my interest piqued. Don't fuck this up, Nintendo.
  2. The Last of Us - I became a fan of Naughty Dog with Uncharted. I tried to get into Jak & Daxter, but it just couldn't be done. That's why, with their newest IP, the whole "take I Am Alive, but make it better" aspect has me 12 kinds of intrigued. The entire game itself has me giddy, and I want to have that game in my possession the moment it was announced.
  3. The Vita's Third-Party Support - Yes. You have not lost your mind. I said the Vita. Why? With recent leaks of Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation that isn't focusing on the Native American Connor, but a French/black femme-fatale (see what I did there?) named Aveline in New Orleans. There's also the new Ghost Recon game rumored to be on the system, and the possibilities from other developers rising, the Vita's library - outside of Sony's first-party stuff - could be amazing.
  4. Assassin's Creed Everything - Firstly, we already know of Assassin's Creed III being there; that's a given. Now, with the leak of Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation, my assassin-senses are tingling up a goddamned storm. I'm a huge fan of the series, and the more, the better. Since these are different studios working on the games (Ubisoft Montreal for AC3, and Ubisoft Sofia on Liberation), it's good to know sources aren't being stretched. 
  5. The Slim Possibility of New Hardware Hints - The Wii U (and a possible 3DS redesign) is going to be at E3, we know that. But Microsoft and Sony both have said they are showing anything in regards to hardware, but when have we actually taken a corporate statement at face value and never looked back? Will Microsoft or Sony saying something about the Loop or Orbis, respectively, next week? It'd be a great way to steal thunder from Nintendo, that's for sure.

[E3 2012] Predictions for Nintendo's Press Conference

Oh. Shit.

Here's the meat-and-veg of this series of posts: Nintendo's conference. This is, quite possibly, the most anticipated press conference of all of E3. Nintendo is the only company who has confirmed to be talking about new hardware. As much as you want to ignore it, Nintendo is ushering in the next generation of hardware, despite being on par with the Xbox 360 and PS3. Nintendo may be a generation behind, technically speaking, they are still in the fight for market share, and they need to keep the momentum they built with the Wii, and bring the 3DS up to speed from it's abysmal launch last year.

I started writing this last week, and with Nintendo having their pre-E3 conference tomorrow evening, I've had to ramp this post up into full-swing and get it out by tonight, as to be out-and-about before they start talking. This post may seem rushed compared to Microsoft and Sony (for one, there isn't a recap at the end), but we can thank Nintendo for shaving two days off of their announcements and doing what Nintendo does best: do shit on a Sunday.
